CLEANWAVE FOUNDATION
Plastic pollution is one of the biggest environmental challenges we face globally, affecting our environment, marine life and human health. Some alarming facts:

– More than 8 millions tons of plastic bottles end up in the sea each year.
– 1.5 million single-use plastic bottles are consumed daily in the Balearic Islands.
– On the Balearics the consumption of plastic water bottles doubles in number that of the rest of Spain.
– 92% of the waste on beaches in the Mediterranean islands is plastic.
– Only 20% of waste is recycled in Mallorca which means that 80% ends up in landfill and/or the ocean.
– Without action, there could be more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050.

Reconnect people and nature
The Cleanwave Foundation is an initiator of community led projects that provide conservation, protection and regeneration of land and sea in the Mediterranean. With a purpose of re-connecting people and nature, the Cleanwave Foundation strives to be a positive wave of action and hope, with the promise to work empathetically and creatively with diverse communities to deliver tangible results. Our vision is for the Balearics to be a globally recognised template and role model for regenerative living by 2026. As the Cleanwave Foundation we see ourselves as being a hands-on solution-orientated organisation. We believe in the power of community in mobilising change, and we go beyond creating awareness to also providing viable and bold solutions that foster regeneration of the natural world.

The Cleanwave Foundation is an initiator of community led projects that provide conservation, protection and regeneration of land and sea in the Mediterranean.

Cleanwave is a social movement that raises awareness about plastic pollution and creates tangible solutions to reduce it, by providing viable alternatives to single use plastic water bottles. Cleanwave has set up a network of water refill stations across the Balearic Islands, and is currentlz running out 30 public fountains together with the local government in the city of Palma. With a purpose of replacing the throw-away culture with a re-use mindset, Cleanwave sets out to make it easier to live without plastic and aspires to achieve a Balearics with no disposable plastic waste by 2030.􏰀􏰁􏰂􏰃􏰄􏰅􏰃􏰆􏰂

MedGardens sets a bold purpose to regenerate shallow Mediterranean underwater forests. With an accomplished team of marine biologists, their vision is to re-establish by 2030, the Mediterranean shallow marine habitats needed for biodiversity to thrive and mitigate the impacts of climate change.

This can only be achieved through collaboration and community-driven marine restoration, whilst generating open-source knowledge in collaboration with scientists and citizens.

Each MedGarden has a community engagement approach that draws people closer to the sea. Through a combination of education; underwater skills training of volunteers; and a citizen assembly “Artivism” initiative emphasis is placed on regeneration of the Mediterranean Sea for generations to come.
